THE roof of a derelict bungalow which was home to a vagrant caught on fire yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

Firefighters from St Albans and Garston were called to the detached property in Oakwood Road, Bricket Wood, at around 3.30pm yesterday to find the roof well alight.

The fire started in a bed within the loft which firefighters said was clearly being used by a squatter who had removed some tiles from the roof to create an entrance. But there was no sign of the vagrant at the scene.

It took firefighters around 20 minutes to put out the flames and it is believed the fire was started accidentally.
