A movie about St Albans resident Philomena Lee has been nominated for four BAFTA nominations, including best film and outstanding British film.

Judi Dench, who plays the eponymous Irish woman in the film Philomena, is also up for best actress at the awards.

The film, co-starring Steve Coogan, who is also in the running for the best adapted screenplay gong, follows Philomena’s journey after revealing she had a long lost son to her family. The 80-year-old moved to St Albans in 1958 where she married and had two children, Jane and Kevin.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House on February 16.
