BUSINESS consultant John Leary-Joyce and his daughter Miriam are teaming up to raise cash to help research into juvenile diabetes. John, aged 51, of Warwick Road, St Albans, will be running in this year's London Marathon for the Junior Diabetes Research Fund and Miriam, 19, is organising a Valentine's Ball to boost his sponsorship. Miriam, a stage student, was diagnosed with the disease when she was eight and John will be running in the marathon for the second time in support of the charity. Miriam said: "I'm very proud of my dad. He's doing a wonderful thing by raising money for an important charity and he is really pushing himself by running the marathon again." Miriam's Valentine's Ball is to he held at the St Albans Irish Association Club in Cotlandswick, London Colney, on Friday, February 10, and to help boost John's fund there will be a raffle and an auction. Talking about diabetes, John said: "More and more people are diagnosed with diabetes every year with changes in lifestyle having a huge impact. Treatment has come so far in the last decade and there is so much more that they can do with the right funding." He added: "Now there is the possibility of a cure with stem-cell research and I want to raise money for the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation to further this ground-breaking work." Tickets for the ball are £20 each with a three-for-the-price-of-two offer and more information is available by calling Miriam on 01727 864806 or 07879 408205.
