Police have now confirmed that the deceased man found by the police in fields near Wheathampstead is that of James Lomax, who was missing from his home six days previously.

Mr Lomax, 83, who suffered with dementia, vanished from his home in Manor Road shortly before 5pm on Thursday, May 21.

Police found a body in a field near to Mr Lomax’s home on Wednesday but have only just confirmed the identity.

A statement released by Mr Lomax’s family said: “Jim’s wife Pauline and all the family would like to thank all the well-wishers and volunteers in helping find Mr Lomax. It was an unbelievable response - we are all so very grateful to neighbours and carers, who have also been very supportive at this sad time.

“My brother and I would especially like to thank everyone for their help.

“A big thank you to Hertfordshire Police for all their support and hard work through this very stressful time. They have been very caring and thoughtful – absolutely amazing.”
