NEGLECTED ponds on Harpenden Common which have had a £250,000 facelift, have been officially reopened. A community campaign, Save Southdown Ponds, was started in 2004 to turn the polluted, unusable ponds into an ecological site in the centre of the town.

A community campaign, Save Southdown Ponds, was started in 2004 to turn the polluted, unusable ponds into an ecological site in the centre of the town.
This involved installing a nine-metre-long petrol interceptor. Polluted silts were then removed, the ponds relined, resculptured and replanted with native species of plants.
Harpenden Town Mayor Cllr Bert Pawle, who performed the opening ceremony, said: "The renovation of the ponds represents a lot of hard work, pulling a variety of agencies together. We have gathered support from Herts Highways, national agencies and grant-making bodies. The ponds have been transformed into a wonderful asset and an integral part of the Common for the public to enjoy.
