Work on the multi-million pound expansion of Spire Harpenden Hospital has taken another stride forward.

Local residents watched on as the four separate 20-tonne components of the new theatre were lowered into place over the weekend. The £5million project to expand the theatre and outpatient ward is due for completion in August.

Hospital business development executive Sarah Chittenden said: “The work will mean waiting times fall and more hospital beds will mean that Spire Harpenden can accommodate a greater number of patients. We won’t be struggling for space anymore.”

“This is an extremely exciting time for Spire Harpenden and the weekend marks a major stage in our development,” said hospital director Julia Salmon: “The staff at the hospital have been fantastic under some challenging circumstances. Our thanks extend to the patients staying at the hospital and our neighbours for their continued support throughout the project.”
