A FUGITIVE who escaped from a prison van during an ambush by armed gunmen was recaptured today (Friday) after four days on the run.

Wayne Joseph Connor, who lived in London Colney until 2005, was en route to Woolwich Crown Court from Feltham Young Offenders Institute in London on Monday morning when he escaped from custody. The 20-year-old was about to stand trial for offences including racially aggravated assault and aggravated burglary.

Two suspects wearing balaclavas forced the prison van to pull over and smashed a window before demanding Connor's release while threatening the driver with a shotgun.

Connor made off with the suspects but he was recaptured by police at an hotel in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, shortly after midnight.

A Herts Police spokesperson said that Wayne Connor was known to them as Wayne O'Connor but that he had various aliases and ages ranging between 19 and 25.

She said that he lived in London Colney until three-years-ago but that his whereabouts had been unknown to them since then.
