WORK has started on a �700,000 extension to a St Albans school which will provide better sixth form facilities and a conference suite.
Bill Kerridge, who is in his 50th year of working at Sandringham School on The Ridgeway, cut the first sod recently before workmen started clearing the site ready for foundations to be laid.
Head teacher Alan Gray said: “This is a really exciting development for the school and one that will provide outstanding additional facilities for our sixth form students to use in their studies for many years to come.
“We have very high standards at the school and our strategic aim is committed to securing the best provision we can for post-16 learning in the future.”
Mr Gray added: “This building will provide a perfect environment for high-quality study, equal to that at most universities, and help young people to realise their dreams.”
The development will include classrooms, a large open-plan air-conditioned study area with library and a Starbucks-style caf� that will be open throughout the day for sixth formers to use. The new building should be open ready for the new sixth form this September.
