Primary school offering first aid training to its pupils

A primary school is offering its pupils first aid training, including CPR, basic life support, and lessons on how to treat broken bones.
The Grove Junior School in Harpenden is offering the chance for students aged seven to 11 to learn from Mini First Aid, run by Herts mum Shavalyea Gilbert.
Deputy head Gilly Walters said: “We are so excited to offer these classes to our pupils. Learning first aid is such an important life skill we think all children should learn.”
PSHE subject leader at The Grove, John Ferguson, said: “You see incredible stories in the news about children who have saved a life, whether by calling an ambulance, doing CPR, or putting someone in the recovery position.
“After I saw Shavalyea give a talk at a local Mothercare, I knew she would be the perfect person to deliver the first aid training to our pupils and parents.”
Mini First Aid comes recommended by Emmerdale actor Lucy Pargeter, who plays Chas Dingle on the show.
Ms Pargeter said: “I cannot recommend Mini First Aid enough. Kate ran a private class for me and my 11-year-old daughter in the comfort of our own home, which was perfect especially as my babies were due any day.
“My daughter and I feel much more confident in knowing what to do in a range of emergency situations and I also got some extra twin tips from Kate as a fellow twin mum!
“It’s such an important life skill that every parent and carer should have so I would urge you to book a Mini First Aid course today.”
Parenting author and blogger Sarah Turner said: “It took just two hours out of my morning and covered a whole host of stuff including what to do if a child is choking, how to deal with burns, breaks, bleeding, and the basics of life-saving CPR for kids.
“If, like me, you haven’t done any first aid training for a while, I can highly recommend Mini First Aid.”
Only pupils at The Grove aged between seven and 11 can attend the courses, and for those who do wish to attend, training is being held on: Wednesday, February 21, Thursday, February 22.
All of the classes will take place 3.30pm to 4.30pm at The Grove Junior School on Dark Lane in Harpenden.
