A group of Year 10 boys at a St Albans school have achieved high results in an extra-curricular Latin exam.
Eight Verulam pupils, in a first for the school, sat the Certificate of Latin Language offered by the Welsh Examination Board, and all achieved A to A* results.
The boys had been learning Latin for a year as part of an extra-curricular club run by Latin teacher Mary Bienfait. Mrs Bienfait has a degree in Classics from Cambridge University, and designed a specific course to cover the curriculum in a compressed timeframe.
She said: “I am delighted with the boys’ success. They had to ‘dig deep’ for extra commitment and perseverance beyond the normal curriculum, progress rapidly within a short timescale, and learn the techniques of sitting a public examination a year before their GCSEs. Congratulations!”
Headteacher Paul Ramsey said: “We are committed to offering Latin as an extra subject and are very pleased with the boys’ success.”
