Tomorrow’s World TV presenter Kate Bellingham visited a St Albans school as part of a bid to raise the profile of women in industries relating to science, technology, engineering and maths.
Kate, who lives locally and completed her Masters degree in communication systems at the University of Herts, was the special guest at St Albans Girls School’s STEM careers event for parents and students.
The evening was held in conjunction with Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce and Kate, herself an engineer, encouraged the young women to consider entering into sectors that were still largely dominated by men.
Year 10 student Dara Jekells said “It was really inspiring to find out the jobs available in these subject areas and the surprising high level of salaries too.”
Many representatives from local international companies such as Glaxo-Smith Kline, IBM, Selex, Imagination and MBDA were on hand to offer careers advice and interact with the audience.
