Tablets were once taken to stave off headaches - but now, in the technological era, tablets (and smartphones, laptops and digital cameras) are causing them.

So thanks to a collaboration between Marshalswick Baptist Church, Computer Friendly and a £3,600 grant from the district council, those people who feel lost in the digital age need fear no more.

Weekly free ‘tea ‘n tech’ drop in sessions are being held every Thursday at the Sherwood Avenue church and volunteers gearing up for a surge of interest as people receive tech Christmas gifts.

Janet Bruce, who began volunteering at the sessions in October, says up to 40 people are attending the sessions, with eight volunteers talking people through their tech.

She said: “It helps people not to feel so isolated and to keep in contact with the world. It is very uplifting to see. There has been quite a lot of development.

“The church is bright and warm and one lady there brings superb cakes. It’s a really nice atmosphere and people are coming back; we’ve got regulars – I think that tells you how well it’s been received.”

Janet is urging those people who are thinking about giving their older relatives tablets or cameras for Christmas to include a tea ‘n tech flyer and make them aware of the free help.

She added: “It’s for all different abilities. Emails, photos, Facebook – we cover anything, really. We send each other emails to practice. It’s a nice feeling for them, receiving their first email – but that wears off.”

Marshalswick Baptist Church minister Graham Clarke said: “It’s helpful for the older generation, but more than that it has become a friendly place for people to be on a Thursday afternoon.”

For more information on the sessions visit mbfc.org.uk or visit the church between 2pm and 5pm on Thursdays.
