EVERY pupil at St George’s School in Harpenden got English and maths at GCSE when results were given out this morning.

Students were queuing outside the exam office at the Sun Lane school just before 8.30am to get their results which resulted in huge numbers of top grades being awarded with records broken in some departments.

As well as the full house in English and maths, 180 out of the 192 pupils got at least five A* to C grades and 94 per cent achieved a GCSE in a foreign language.

Head Norman Hoare, who thanked his exam officers Paul McGillivray and Gisella Michaels for all their work behind the scenes to get the results out on time and correctly, said: “This is an astonishingly good achievement for an all-ability school that does not select on ability.

“To see every young person getting maths and English at GCSE is wonderful when some find any kind of academic testing a huge challenge. Some of our pupils have struggled and sweated tog et a clutch of GCSEs to allow them to proceed to college courses or employment. They are often the real heroes in our system.”
