AN EMPTY school minibus ended up partially submerged in a lake after being left parked in a leisure complex car park.

The Verulam School vehicle is believed to have rolled from a stationary position because the handbrake was left off at Stanborough Lakes in Welwyn Garden City.

The only casualty from the incident was pride as no students or staff were anywhere near the runaway minibus.

Verulam School head teacher Paul Ramsey said he believed it was probably caused by a member of staff forgetting to put the handbrake on.

The cost to the school is as yet unknown but Mr Ramsey said that the vehicle was covered by fully comprehensive insurance. He added: “Like any other traffic accident we’ll be covered by insurance.” But he said he would be boosting the training staff received before they drove school minibuses.

The vehicle was recovered from the lake a few hours after the incident.
