PUMPKINS, potatoes and peas are just some of the natural riches grown and harvested by pupils at a school in St Albans in a joint project with a local garden centre.

Seven children with learning difficulties from Watling View School have taken part in a “grow your own” project with Burston Garden Centre in Chiswell Green since February and have begun to reap the benefits of their work.

The nursery provided the group with raised beds and a unique opportunity to engage in outdoor learning.

Karen Richards, primary manager at Watling View said “The children are thoroughly enjoying this venture. It has given them opportunities to increase their confidence, develop their collaborative skills and not only see but taste the results of their hard work.”

The children have also planted lettuces, radishes, runner beans, strawberries and herbs.

Darran Major, plants manager at Burston said “It’s been an absolute pleasure having the children from Watling View attend our ‘Seedlings Project’. Having the opportunity to see the younger generation growing their own vegetables with so much energy and enthusiasm has been a most enjoyable experience. We have covered every element from seed sowing right up to harvesting and there is still more to come. All the children have thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it would be a pleasure to welcome them back again next year.”
