SPORTY students at a St Albans primary school have wowed teachers with their summer achievements.

SS Albans and Stephen Junior School on Cecil Road has come out on top in myriad sports this season, including rugby, swimming, football and even equestrian.

Recently the school won the Champion of Champions Kwik Cricket tournament, and at the beginning of last month the six-a-side girls football team impressed at a Fleetville school tournament with a determined and spirited performance.

At the St Albans District Sports Awards, year 5 pupil Olivia Collins won a bundle of certificates for her achievements in Special Olympic sports such as swimming and equestrian. The year 5 and 6 boys football team, who won the Large Schools League this season, also came out on top at the awards, where they won the St Albans Team of the Year for their sportsmanship.

Head teacher Helen Hill said that she was particularly impressed with the football results: “Their success has been phenomenal and this is despite the fact that we do not have a suitable pitch on which to play football. The enthusiasm and dedication to sport in the school is extraordinary – 99 per cent of the children participate in one or more school clubs.”

Chair of Governors Dr Jane Halpin added: “We are so proud of the children’s sporting achievements and it is fantastic that they have done so well. We are also proud that so many of our children participate in sports at a time when rates of childhood obesity are rising.”

SS Albans and Stephen Junior School, which also won the shield for the most children participating in the St Albans fun run for the third year in a row, is eager to fill spare year 4, 5 and 6 spaces from September and anyone interested should contact Ms Hill on 01727 866668 as soon as possible
