Primary pupils have proved there is no place like school after transforming their garden into scenes from a famous Hollywood tale.

Students from Margaret Wix primary in St Albans have been busy re-creating the Wizard of Oz, the novel which also found fame as a Hollywood classic in 1939, as part of their outdoor learning project.

Pupils from all years have worked together to turn the school garden into the Land of Oz, the Emerald City, and Aunt Em’s house and farm.

A rainbow has also been planted in the garden and each year group has used garden boxes outside their classrooms to represent each colour of the rainbow.

Reception children made the iconic ‘Wicked Witches’ leg and other years have created life size characters from the classic tale.

Danny Shergold, reception teacher and art coordinator, said: “It has been a long old haul battling against the awful weather this year with snugs, snails, illness and the such like, but we have done it and are very proud of the end result.”

The pupils celebrated the culmination of the project on Friday (15) by singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow in the garden.

Danny added: “We’ve had a positive year this year after much hard work, and with a great Ofsted inspection we would love to put the school on the creative map and celebrate our quirkiness, creativity and successes.”
