Half a century after it opened, a St Albans school is throwing open its doors on Sunday for a celebratory open day.

From 12.30pm to 4.30pm, Nicholas Breakspear School in Colney Heath Lane will be offering numerous events to mark its 50th anniversary, including a barbecue, live music and dance acts, a football tournament, inflatables, target shooting and archery.

Among the acts on the main stage will be Irish dancing and music including Chris Anderson’s Missing the Ferry as well as performances from many talented pupils and ex-pupils of the school.

A raffle will also be held with prizes including a large painting of Marilyn Monroe.

There will also be displays of archive photos, including a picture of the Science Block when it first opened, having cost the princely sum of £900 to construct.
