St Albans mums have launched a petition urging Herts county council to tackle the “black hole” of primary school places.
Last week, the Herts Advertiser reported on the cases of several children placed at schools miles from home.
Now they’ve taken the matter into their own hands by calling on Herts county council to: “address the inadequate provision of primary school places in the central area of St Albans.
“Under-provision in the central area is pulling communities apart by sending a large number of children outside their local area for schooling.”
The petition calls on the council to either expand a school, or build a new one, and create a bulge class at the existing schools for the September intake.
A county council spokesperson said: “While acknowledging localised pressures in and around the city centre, there are sufficient places available across St Albans at existing schools.
“The council will continue to work with St Albans City and District Council to identify and promote suitable new primary school sites in its Local Plan.”
