THE GENEROSITY of a former headteacher has given children and parents at a St Albans school a chance to create a piece of art they hope will stand the test of time.
The bespoke stained-glass mosaic will take pride of place in the Abbey VA Primary School hall and act as a focal point, particularly for the school’s acts of collective worship. The mosaic measures a staggering 56in by 81in and was funded by a legacy left by former headteacher Bob Essery who passed away in 2008. He was headteacher at the school from 1988 to 1995.
The mosaic, designed by local artist Helen Robinson, was the brainchild of Libby Grundy who retired as headteacher in July of this year. She wanted to create something truly memorable and relevant to the primary school.
Current headteacher, Emma Fenn, said: “The kindness of this former headteacher will be enjoyed by hundreds of pupils now and in the future. We all think this is a wonderful and fitting tribute to the Abbey Primary School.”
The artwork was blessed by the sub dean of St Albans, Canon Stephen Lake, in a dedication service at the school last Thursday, December 16. Mr Essery’s sister, Sally Ann Thompson, and Mrs Grundy were both at the ceremony.
