NICK Daymond, head of Roundwood Park School in Harpenden believes the fact that more A* and A grades have been awarded than in previous years - both nationally and at his own school - is because students are increasingly able to access courses that are better suited to their talents and abilities.

He said: "The quality of teaching, advice and guidance continues to improve and, significantly, our young people by and large recognise that exam success is important to their future and work hard to get the grades they need to progress in their education, whether that be in school sixth forms, colleges of further education or apprenticeships.

"We are again delighted with the achievements of this year's GCSE students but we also want to recognise the life-enhancing skills, talents and qualities that they have developed during their years of education which don't get certificated.
