Pupils at a school in Harpenden were presented with their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards after a 95 per cent success rate.

The 126 St George’s School pupils received their certificates in the school’s chapel after completing the award, which saw them walk nearly 1,000km on practices and assessed expeditions.

Headmistress Helen Barton said: “Since 2011 over 600 students have achieved the Bronze award, making St George’s the biggest participating school in the south east. We also have 26 students who have completed their Gold with a further 60 students in years 12 and 13 in the process.

“I am delighted that we are able to offer so many students the opportunity to participate in this award scheme which of course would not be possible without the dedication of the staff.”

The previous week, Miss Barton and D of E Award leader Laura Howard attended St James’s Palace for the Gold Award ceremony with HRH Prince Edward.
