Children from Mandeville School in St Albans teamed up with care home residents over the summer holidays.
Year 5 and 6 pupils from Mandeville Junior School visited Grace Muriel House, run by Abbeyfield, in Tavistock Avenue over the summer to plant sunflowers with the residents.
The project took place across Abbeyfield care homes, and involved different groups of children visiting Grace Muriel House over several months and planting around 20 sunflowers.
Gemma Thomas, administration assistant at Grace Muriel House, said: “The children visited over about four or five months on numerous occasions. Our garden looks wonderful, and the sunflowers have grown enormous, so we thought it was finally time to measure the tallest one.
“A few residents, along with some help from our gardener Chris, measured the sunflower to be an amazing 11 feet tall! That is incredible, and well done to all those who helped nurture and water it!
“They really did enjoy it. It was very beneficial for both the school and us.”
