It’s the red-ringed highlight on the calendar of schools across the St Albans district, the event everyone from teachers to support staff and pupils to parents looks forward to.

We’re talking of course about the annual Herts Advertiser School Awards, a fantastic free celebration of all that’s great about our local education system.

Each year, only the district’s finest education establishments, staff and pupils are awarded a gold star in the Herts Advertiser School Awards.

This is your chance to celebrate your school’s hardworking and dedicated members of staff, highlight the achievements of the student body, shout about any innovative projects you have part taken in, and celebrate those unsung heroes without whom our schools would be poorer places.

The winners of this year’s awards will be revealed at a gala evening taking place at Oaklands College on June 28, which will see schools and sponsors come together to celebrate the continuous achievements of educational institutions in St Albans and Harpenden.

For the first time, and following popular demand, this year’s awards include the new category of Nursery of the Year, so make sure you nominate your children’s nursery for this accolade.

Other categories for the 2017 awards include Teacher of the Year (Primary and Secondary), Pupil of the Year, Sporting Achiever of the Year, School of the Year (Primary and Secondary), Innovation/Project of the Year, Special Recognition Award, Support Staff Member Award and Unsung Hero Award, and we will be focusing on each of these awards in the following weeks.

Herts Advertiser editor Nina Morgan said: “Don’t miss out on your chance to give someone from our remarkable schools the appreciation they deserve.

“There’s plenty of time to put in your nomination for this year’s Herts Advertiser School Awards – it’s free, easy and is certain to make a difference to whoever you nominate.”

Once again the awards are being backed by Oaklands College, and the awards evening will be presented and broadcast as part of Radio Verulam’s The Parents Show.

Co-producer and presenter Dr Kathy Weston said: “I am honoured to be presenting the Herts Advertiser School Awards 2017 that will once again celebrate local schools, teachers and support staff that go above and beyond for their pupils. I also look forward to giving out awards on behalf of our fantastic sponsors, to pupils who have shown exceptional bravery, commitment or achievement in a particular area of their life. I hope that parents take the time to nominate those individuals in schools who deserve public recognition for their hard work and passionate commitment to pupils.”

Oaklands College principal Zoe Hancock added: “We are very proud to once again support the Herts Advertiser School Awards. It is a wonderful opportunity to recognise the hard work of teachers, staff and students in our local area who go the extra mile to achieve success. Schools play a vital role in our communities so it is important that we recognise their dedication and achievements.”
