SCHOOLCHILDREN in St Albans will be able to walk to school in safety, whatever the weather, thanks to a replacement footbridge over the River Ver.
The bridge, provided by the Countryside Management Service and Herts County Council as part of the Discover the River Ver project, has been raised after flooding in previous years left the route inaccessible to many, including pupils from Park Street Primary School.
The new bridge on Hyde Lane, Park Street, will also provide access to the lakes and riverside walks, as well as Frogmore Pits fishery.
Stuart Pile, executive member for highways and transport, said: “This partnership project brings wider benefits to people using the improved paths and bridges to get to work and school.
“Improvements made through this project mean access is constantly maintained and children can walk this way to school, relieving traffic pressure outside the school.”
The Discover the River Ver Project will also create a series of short walks following the river and exploring the surrounding countryside.
