SMILES all round greeted GCSE results at Sir John Lawes School in Harpenden with many students achieving strings of A and A* grades.

Over 40 per cent of all the grades were at A or A* and 38 students achieved eight or more of the highest grades.

Head of Year, Niki Miller-Marshall, praised the year group for their hard work and said: “It has been a pleasure to work with such a motivated group of young people and these results are a fitting reward for their efforts during their GCSE courses.”

The school was particularly pleased with its first-ever set of results for the new Extended Project qualification - designed for students in the sixth form but used by Sir John Lawes as an extension course for the most able Year 11s.

Head teacher Claire Robins said: “We are always looking for ways to stretch our most talented students and the fact that 11 of our students achieved A* or A for this advanced qualification shows the value of giving bright youngsters extra challenges when they are ready not just when they are the right age.”
