An infant school has begun a year of celebratory events marking half a century of teaching.

Since opening in 1964, Wheatfields Infant and Nursery has welcomed countless children through their doors and the school haa lots planned to celebrate the special anniversary.

The celebratory year kicked off with a ceremony which saw Lady Verulam, the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, unveil a commemorative plaque.

The event was attended by director of education Gillian Crawley, council leader Julian Daly and former staff and pupils.

Among those was Sandringham School head teacher Alan Gray, who was at the school when it first opened.

The special guests amazed the pupils with tales of sixties school life with glass milk bottles, a school paddling pool and sandpit.

Head teacher Jane Whitehurst said: “It was an amazing experience and an incredibly special event for all who attended.”

Next on the events calendar is a ‘Frost Fair’
on November 15, where pupils will be allocated a decade from the past 50 years and host a themed stall.

Celebrations will continue well into 2015, with a final ball held in July.

The school would like to hear from past pupils and staff. Email cchurchill@wheatfieldsinfants.herts.sch.uk
