Legions of St Albans schoolchildren dressed up as Romans or in the St Albans colours of yellow and blue for Alban Day.
A range of schools took part in non-uniform days to celebrate the life and sacrifice of Saint Alban, while helping raise money for St Albans’ new museum and gallery.
Mandeville Primary School headteacher Cathy Longhurst said: “Alban Day was a perfect opportunity for staff and children to leave their uniform at home and dress as Romans to raise money to support new learning opportunities in the St Albans museum and gallery.”
The new museum, based at the old town hall, will feature a dedicated learning centre for schools.
Many of the headteachers have already met with museum staff to work out new educational opportunities for their schools.
Margaret Wix headteacher Damien Johnston said: “Alban Day on Friday 23rd June provided an opportunity for the children to learn about local developments which will help shape their local identity. We look forward to taking groups of children to the new museum when it opens.”
Bernards Heath junior school headteacher Sian Kilpatrick said: “We have enjoyed our Alban Day. We have raised over £250 to support the development of the new Museum and Galleries in St Albans.”
Cunningham Hill infant school headteacher Charlotte Cooper said: “We were excited to take part in the Alban Day non-uniform day. The children have been learning about key places in St Albans during their assemblies this week, and we are looking forward to visiting the new museum when it opens next year.”
St John Fisher headteacher Laura Fitton said: “We are delighted to support and be part of the exciting redevelopment of the town hall by wearing blue and yellow. In the week that we celebrated our own feast day it seemed only fitting to honour the feast of Saint Alban too.”
SS Alban and Stephen infant school headteacher Bernadette Dempsey said: “School is always cheerful place but today we really shone in our ‘St Albans’ colours. One of our teachers even had yellow nails! Our target was £100 but we managed to double it, thanks to the generosity of our parents.”
