Harpenden school opens sensory garden

A HARPENDEN primary school now boasts a tranquil area designed to encourage pupils to fully explore the plant world, with a new sensory, spiritual garden.
Thanks to a “very keen” group of parents, children and governors led by teaching assistant Tracey Dallow, the garden was created at St Nicholas School, Church Green.
It includes a water feature and living willow structure in the shape of a whale which a spokeswoman explained will, “grow along with our children”.
She added: “We have also planted lots of plants to stimulate the senses.”
The spokeswoman explained: “We are very proud of being a church school. Our Christian values underpin all that we do and we wanted this to extend to our small grounds.”
The new garden was officially opened last week by former Harpenden town mayor, Cllr Michael Weaver, and blessed by curate Becky Leach.
The area will be used for quiet reflection time, whole class RE teaching and other peaceful activities.
