Young geographers from Harpenden narrowly missed out of a prize volunteering trip to Africa in a national competition recently.

Out of 200 British schools that entered, Year 9 and 10 St George’s School students were finalists in the African Adventures’ School Geography Challenge.

Nine teams spent March 28 focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Four, to ensure inclusive and quality education for everyone.

The winning school was announced on Friday (March 31) as Stafford Grammar School, and they will volunteer on a project in Kenya.

Communications manager at African Adventures, Rachel Northover, said they were blown away: “It was wonderful to see them really engaging and increasing their knowledge of development issues in Kenya.”

It was endorsed by the examination board OCR, sponsored by Kenya Airways, and supported by the School Travel Forum.

African Adventures is a volunteer travel company that supports 27 partner community school projects in Ghana, Kenya, and Zanzibar.
