The St Albans Dragons’ Apprentice Challenge was launched last Thursday (24) at St Albans Girls’ School, with teams of Year 12 students paired with a business mentor – their ‘dragon’ – along with a charity or community group.

Now in its 7th year, the challenge will see the teams broaden their business know-how as they develop strategies and turn £100 of seed capital into £1,000 or more, with all profit generated going directly to beneficiaries.

Since its inception by the Centre for Voluntary Service in St Albans seven year ago, it has generated over £289,000 for 155 Herts-based charities and groups.

At the launch, St Albans Mayor Cllr Salih Gaygusuz said the challenge provided, “inspiring opportunities for young people to learn and practice skills that businesses seek.

“Equally importantly, it supports and raises awareness of many charities and community groups. I hope the students have an extremely rewarding time as they work with their mentors, as they turn ideas into fundraising reality.”

Residents and businesses in St Albans and Harpenden should look out for and support teams as they compete in the annual event between now and January 31, as projects might include running stalls at Christmas markets, hosting dinners at restaurants, or selling refreshments at local fairs.
