WHO better to talk to students about local government than three members of St Albans district council.

Geoff Churchard, (Lib Dem, Marshalswick North), Annie Brewster (Conservative, Wheathampstead) and Jacob Quagliozzi (Labour, London Colney) visited Nicholas Breakspear School in Colney Heath Lane recently to take part in a question and answer session for a Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) lesson for Years 8 and 9.

Subjects that the pupils were interested in included the provision of local sporting and youth facilities, vandalism and the make-up of the council.

After the session, Annie said the pupils were very engaged, adding: “It’s really hard to understand the different tiers and the infrastructure of local government; each parish has 12 councillors, three of whom sit on the district council.”

Barry O’Sullivan, PSHE co-ordinator, said he hoped the pupils would think about the opportunities of being a parish or district councillor or working for local government when they were older.

He added: “I would like to thank the councillors who gave up their time to raise awareness of this important issue.”
