YOUNG music fans in St Albans are to be consulted on live music services in the district.

This follows concerns raised by residents about the absence of a cinema in St Albans city, and a lack of appropriate places for young people to meet and relax.

A St Albans district council committee wants young people to be involved in advising the authority on opportunities available for them to listen to and play live music at local venues.

Cllr Robert Donald, chair of an overview and scrutiny committee, said: “Music is an enormously important element of all our lives, especially for young people. We want St Albans to be a premier cultural destination for all the arts which must include different types of music being available for young people to enjoy and participate in.”

However, the committee wants advice and expertise from young adults in the area to help make headway on the issue.

The committee has asked the Youth Action Group, a partnership consisting of organisations working with young people, including Oaklands College, to consult young adults about the current provision and how it could be improved.

The aim is to identify practical and cost-effective ways of fostering and improving live music services.

A recent report to the committee detailed music provision in the city, and how young people can get involved with live music, such as taking lessons at St Albans Music School and attending gigs at The Horn, the Alban Arena and other live music venues.
