An audience of 350 watched the grounds care team of a St Albans school receive an award for providing first-class playing fields – the home of local rugby, cricket and other sports clubs.
The well-tended surface of Woollams playing fields, Harpenden Road, where Old Albanians Rugby Club is based, helped the team which looks after it collect an accolade.
Grounds staff from St Albans School, Abbey Gateway, won the Institute of Groundsmanship school, college or university sports club grounds team of the year award.
The team of six full-time employees was praised for the high standard of the 73-acre site, which hosts football, athletics and cross country fixtures seven days a week, for the school and local sports associations.
Saracens rugby club also trains there.
