The school held a special day of worship and remembrance, where pupils dressed up in red, or as angels or soldiers.

The costumes helped the schoolchildren recount the story of Saint Alban, the first British Christian martyr, who was beheaded by the Romans for sheltering a priest.

Headteacher Emma Fenn said: “The story of Saint Alban takes us right back to the beginning of Christianity in Britain and provides an opportunity for families and members of staff to reflect upon the inspirational story during Albantide.

“It is an extremely special occasion for us, not only as the trust deed school of St Albans Cathedral, but for the whole community.”

The Alban Pilgrimage, a historic event in the city, will take place this Sunday, featuring a parade of giant puppets through the city centre.
