A World War I expert visited a school in Harpenden to talk to pupils about the experience of war.
Historian Andrew Spooner visited St George’s School to mark remembrance week and the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele.
Year 9 pupils took part in workshop sessions with original artefacts including surgical instruments, letters, weapons, anda soldier’s bible with a bullet embedded in it. Andrew described the kit issued to new recruits and dressed a pupil in a greatcoat. The pupils will go on to write diaries in the style of Western Front soldiers.
History teacher Adam Muriss said: “I have helped organise this day for 12 years and as always it was informative, entertaining, and enjoyable. All the students were kept spellbound by Andrew’s wonderfully engaging style and they appreciated his quirky form of expertise.”
A service was also held in the school chapel to mark the former pupils who died in both world wars.
