HIGHWAYS bosses have been accused of causing confusion by publishing errors in a map showing diversion routes in St Albans. These are the roads recommended during the closure of St Peter's Street for eight weeks from January 30. The advert placed by Herts Highways described the road linking Folly Lane and Verulam Road as Church Street instead of Church Crescent. It showed Ridgmont Road as a route from Victoria Street to London Road even though the private road, owned by Network Rail, has been closed by bollards for more than 18 months. Oswald Road, off Alma Road, was also shown as running into Ridgmont Road but the junction was closed several years ago. Ian Simpson, from London Road, St Albans, who pointed out many of the errors, said the railway line was shown as crossing over all three main roads from the east into the city. But he pointed out that while it runs over London Road, both Victoria Street and Hatfield Road pass over it. The advert also claims that the initial part of the work already completed improved accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians. But as part of the latest round of work Herts Highways will be removing the sub-standard cycle lanes which were introduced in the last round. A Herts Highways said: "The map is for illustrative purposes to show the key areas of the diversion route. It is not to scale and aims only to highlight which roads are closed and the diversion route that people need to follow.
