SIX dogs are thought to have died in the early hours of this morning after a massive fire engulfed buildings on a farm in the countryside near Markyate.

Three firefighters were slightly injured tackling the blaze at Doone Brae farm in Windmill Lane and crews were still on the scene this morning (Friday) to dampen it down.

Fire broke out just after midnight in a single-story wooden building but the flames soon leapt to a nearby livery block in the strong winds.

Some livestock were rescued and a 75-kilogram propane cylinder had to be moved to a safe position.

At the height of the blaze more than 50 firefighters from across Herts and Beds battled to get the fire under control but their efforts were hampered by the wind.

An ambulance was called for one firefighter and a further two needed treatment for electric shocks.
