THIEVES tricked their way into the home of an 80-year-old woman before stealing her wallet and cheque book.
The incident happened at 2.30pm on Tuesday at a property near to the Lower Luton Road in Harpenden.
The woman allowed the two men into her home after they claimed that they needed to investigate a water leak.
When the woman became suspicious, she challenged the men who then left. But they had already stolen a wallet containing cash and her cheque book.
Police are currently seeking witnesses and information about the incident.
The first man is described as white, aged between 40 and 50, of a medium build and around 5ft 10ins tall with short brown hair. He was wearing a dark coloured top.
The second man is thought to be white, aged between 23 and 27, and of slim build.
Detective Constable Jonathan Green, from Operation Manhunt, Herts Police's team dedicated to catching distraction burglars, said: "I would appeal to anyone who believes they saw these two men acting suspiciously in the area on this day to contact police.
"It is believed the offenders made off towards a park near to where the offence was committed and I would appeal for witnesses who may have been in the park and think they may have seen something to contact police as soon as possible.
He added: "I would also take this opportunity to remind people to be extra vigilant and urge friends and family to remind their elderly relatives not to open the door to anyone that they are not expecting, and always report suspicious behaviour to the police immediately."
Anyone with information should contact the police on 0845 33 00 222.
