Discount foodstore planned as part of major retail development on former St Albans gasworks site

A major new retail development is planned on the former St Albans gasworks site which is owned by National Grid.
Consolidated Property Group (CPG) will be submitting an outline planning application development shortly to redevelop the redundant site at Graham Close/Griffiths Way on behalf of themselves and National Grid.
The multi-million pound proposals will include a mixed use redevelopment comprising a new discount foodstore, a further five food and/or non-food retail units - possibly with a gymnasium over them - a 4,000 square ft restaurant and a drive-thru.
It will be set in an ‘L’ shaped terrace around the site boundary fronting Griffiths Way and Graham Close.
A planning application is set to be submitted in the next few weeks for the scheme which will have just under 300 parking spaces and create up to 200 new jobs.
A spokesperson for CPG said the scheme would, ‘regenerate and redevelop a highly accessible, visually prominent site which presently detracts from the character and appearance of the area and has significant levels of contamination’.
The site of the former gasworks and storage facility has been out of use for several years with the tanks being removed in 2014.
