Witnesses who saw a car crash near Wheathampstead which claimed the life of an 83-year-old man are urged to contact police.

The accident occurred on the B653 Marford Road shortly before 11am on Saturday, when a blue Ford Fiesta failed to negotiate a bend near the Waterend Lane junction and subsequently collided with a tree.

The driver, who came from Hatfield, was pronounced dead at the scene. At this stage no other vehicles are thought to have been involved and no one else was hurt.

PC Bob Hauxwell, who is investigating the collision, said: “I would like to speak to anyone who saw the crash or anyone who saw the Fiesta driving on the road in the moments before the collision occurred. Your information may help us piece together the circumstances of the collision.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Hauxwell in the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit on the police non-emergency number 101.
