A controversial scheme to turn Harpenden’s last hotel into apartments has been withdrawn by developers - but only temporarily.

Fairview New Homes had asked St Albans district council for approval to demolish outbuildings at Harpenden House Hotel, Southdown Road, and build 31 one-to-three bedroom apartments.

The developer also wanted to build four four-bedroom houses.

But the scheme came under fire from local residents who launched a Facebook campaign to save the town’s last hotel and obtained over 1,700 signatures on an online petition.

The Herts Advertiser understands that Fairview withdrew the application following comments from the council and will resubmit an altered plan.
