A group of protestors are set to demonstrate outside a well-loved pub in an attempt to stop its status as an ‘asset of community value’ being removed.

The Camp pub in St Albans was closed in May 2015 after Hertford-based McMullen & Sons sold it due to a declining number of customers.

After a petition to ‘Save The Camp Public House’ was presented to St Albans district council, the pub was to protected as an ‘asset of community value’ (ACV).

Now the new owners, Howarth Homes, who wish to covert the pub into housing, have lodged an appeal to get the ACV status removed, with the review meeting taking place on January 25.

Supporters of The Camp have been invited to demonstrate outside the pub by people behind the ‘Save the Camp’ campaign.

Steve Bury, campaign secretary said: “The Camp was closed at very short notice in May last year leaving a large area of St Albans without a pub. The campaigners want St Albans Coucil to retain the Asset of Community Value status and give the local people an opportunity to have their say on the future of their local.”

The demonstration will take place at midday on Saturday (9).
