Demolition has begun on a Harpenden landmark after a phone company won the right to construct a 20m mast in its place.

The 26-metre high Harpenden water tower, located off Shakespeare Road, can be seen from all over the town.

Original plans to remove the tower from the landscape were finalised in June 2014, but local residents were concerned that they knew nothing of what was being built in its place.

Harpenden town council also rejected the original proposals as it was felt the new structure would not have been hidden well enough and could impact on neighbouring properties.

A month later St Albans councillors turned down an official planning application from mobile firm Telefonica on the grounds that the appearance of the mast would not fit in with the surrounding area.

Telefonica successfully went to appeal over the decision and work to demolish the water tower began last week
