UNEMPLOYMENT figures for September show that the number of people claiming benefit in the district has fallen.

1,566 people in the district claimed Jobseeker’s Allowance last month compared with 1,597 people in August and 1567 in July.

The figure is an improvement on September 2009 when 1,747 people were claiming benefit because they were out of work.

Of those claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance last month, 1,066 were men and 500 were women.

The figures mean that 1.8 per cent of the district’s population was receiving benefit in September compared with 2.5 per cent of Herts as a whole.
