A DARING but romantic young couple have tied the knot at the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Charli Martin, aged 25 and Arthur Tizard, aged 27, got married after scaling the dizzy 134-metre height of Australia's iconic landmark on Saturday. They are only the sixth couple to do so.

The newly-weds will now have a four-month honeymoon travelling around Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong and China before returning to the UK.

Charli, a former Townsend School pupil, moved to Australia with Arthur last year when he was awarded an engineering post in Sydney through his work with a London company.

Charli worked in holistic therapy before leaving the UK but has been volunteering for an environment centre during her time in Sydney.

That has involved working on various research projects and events to raise awareness of local environmental issues, including an endangered penguin colony.

Arthur, son of Julia and Mark, grew up in Tewin and attended Simon Balle school in Hertford. Charli, daughter of BBC Three's Dog Borstal trainer Mic Martin and wife Terri, grew up in Garden Village, Hatfield.

The couple met through close friends in 2003 and had a long-distance relationship while they were both studying at university.

They got engaged on the bank of the River Thames and decided that they wanted to do something different for their wedding.

They climbed the bridge in the morning sunshine after getting the ferry from their home in Manly and the ceremony was carried out on the viewing platform with the bridge guide and the photographer acting as their witnesses.

Charli said: "We were enjoying the climb so much we almost forgot that we were actually getting married when we got to the top but as we got higher and took our positions, still harnessed to the wire, it hit us that we had managed to pull off this crazy dream.

"The ceremony and vows were lovely and we both got a bit tearful but mostly I was laughing as there was an aeroplane and a helicopter flying very closely above us making lots of noise during our romantic moments!"

She added: "As we said our vows and kissed we hadn't realised that another group had been watching from a distance and they all screamed 'congratulations!' and started clapping for us."

Once back at ground level the couple signed their wedding certificate and headed off to a luxury hotel with views of the harbour and botanical gardens where they enjoyed some celebratory champagne on the roof lounge followed by lunch at a Chinese restaurant.

Later on in the evening the couple went to the Opera House to see A Midsummer Night's Dream before arriving back at the hotel to find that their families had recorded video wedding greeting messages for them.

Charli added: "By the time the day finished we were exhausted, it went so quickly though."

The couple are now looking forward to celebrating with family and friends on their return to the UK in early July.
