About 150 people waited outside the O2 store in St Peter's Street for the chance to get their hands on Apple's new iPhone which was available for the first time.
Most shops were only allotted a few dozen phones to sell which left many customers disappointed.
Queuing had begun by 7.30am with the store due to open at 8.02. Gordon Harley, managing director of William Lawrence Advertising Agency based in St. Albans, described the queue as a "weird sight" on the city's main street.
He added: "At first I thought it was a stunt there were so many people".
Mr. Harley said there was "a calm atmosphere" with people in the queue chatting and everyone seemed to be quite friendly.
He said the queue was so long O2 staff had to reroute it down a side alley to stop it blocking other shopfronts.
