A CREW of fundraising sailors docked at St Albans recently to raise money at a football match.
Five members of the crew of HMS St Albans, a Type 23 frigate, visited Clarence Park on Saturday to raise money for their chosen charity, Help for Heroes, at the St Albans City v Newport County match.
The fundraisers, who have recently completed a four-month deployment in the Mediterranean, left for the ground on foot at around midday from their lodgings at the Comfort Hotel on Holywell Hill.
Petty Officer Andy Gibbs, who has raised just over �30,000 for the charity which helps wounded soldiers, first came up with the idea to fundraise at football matches by selling Help for Heroes wristbands for �2 a piece to the crowd.
A Royal Navy spokesperson said: "Our HMS St Albans team would like to thank all the parties that enabled this event to happen, not to mention the people of St Albans for helping us raise funds for this very worthwhile cause.
