A MAJOR road into St Albans was closed for nearly two hours this afternoon after a three car pile-up.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash along the busy A5 in Markyate at around 12.30pm.

Police understand that a green Nissan was travelling in front of a trail of four vehicles heading southbound when it swerved into London Road without any indication.

It is believed to have caused the taxi travelling immediately behind to brake suddenly and then the three cars following it – a navy Toyota Avensis, a white box van and an Audi TT – to crash successively. The woman travelling in the Audi was taken to hospital with neck injuries.

The road was closed until 1.20pm while recovery took place.

Anyone with information about the accident should contact police on 0845 33 00 222.
