PUPILS as young as 12 are getting a head start on the road to computer skills. Seventeen St Albans School students have just completed the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL), a Europe-wide qualification which tests skills in word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations and the internet. The qualification is aimed at adults but the teachers decided to offer the course as an optional extra. David Richards, head of ICT at the school in Abbey Gateway, St Albans, said: "The ECDL offers our pupils an excellent opportunity of improving their ICT skills while working towards a very relevant and worthwhile qualification." The course which took 18 months to complete meant pupils had to pass seven modules in order to gain the qualification which is recognised throughout Europe. Pupil James Bartholomeusz, aged 12, said: "I'm now really confident with most aspects of computer use." The ECDL uses practical tests based on how computers are used in everyday office situations.
